Surely by now, anybody who’s looked at a screen today knows what has happened in Washington, D. C. earlier this afternoon.
I don’t care what your opinions are about the integrity of the 2020 Presidential elections; what happened today is nothing short of a coup d’etat orchestrated by a man with intentions of abusing his political power in a dictatorial fashion.
We can all disagree with each other over almost anything. We are humans, after all. So, what happened to our humanity in the UNITED States of America? Where is the “United” in our name?
Al Gore famously conceded a hotly contested Presidential race in 2000 in order to prevent a situation like this from occurring. Twenty years have passed, and that example has been long forgotten. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but it didn’t fall in a day, either. We have spent two decades dwelling on what makes us different from each other, instead of focusing on what similarities we share with each other.
Donald Trump, regardless of what you may believe, has fairly lost this election. If he must win an election by force, he has already lost the election. This terroristic show of intimidation isn’t going to stop the inevitable. Nor will this be the last from these groups, I’m sure.
An as-of-yet unidentified woman has died from this violence. It’s time to let go. It’s time to move on. And it’s time to heal from the scars on our nation’s history this incident has formed.
None of this needed to happen today. Is THIS what “making America great again” looks like? To me, this looks less like a “great” America and more like the chaos of the storming of the Bastille, which started the French Revolution of 1789.
Members of our armed forces have died fighting against dictators like this in foreign countries. What happened here today spits in the faces of each one of their sacrifices. This is not what they gave their lives to defend.
I plead with every sane, rational American who cares about what America means to them. Please. End this depravity. Donald Trump is not a well man. The toll of losing this election, I believe, has cracked his ego. It’s not worth the consequences to perpetuate this farce.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat, a Republican, a Libertarian, an Independent, or just plain unaffiliated. Absolutely NONE of this is acceptable, least of all from a nation whose people value its democracy more than anything in the world.
I hope this violence will stop so this nation has a chance to heal. It needs to stop NOW.
Each one of us needs to take a step back and reexamine what the concept of “America” means to each of us.
I, for one, condemn the actions of these terrorists (and they are by definition, TERRORISTS) at the Capitol Building this afternoon. I applaud President-Elect Joe Biden for taking a stand and addressing this madness head-on.
I do not condone violence against others, nor will I condone it or any other violence. We are supposed to be the “leaders of the Free World.” Please act like it. If there were ever a time–a single moment in the annals of American history–to reexamine the boundaries of our humanity, this would be it.
I am barely holding onto a single, frayed strand of hope this will be resolved without further casualties. That hope is all that is keeping me calm at this moment.
You made your point. You can stop now. For the sake of the soul of this nation and for that of each one of its inhabitants, move on and let us heal. It’s time to end this depravity.
